Introduction

You’re stranded. Stuck on some island in the middle of the ocean, with no hope of rescue. You’re hungry. You’re thirsty. You’re tired. You must survive. This guide will help you survive the trials that lay ahead.

What is Stranded?

This gamemode is about surviving with your fellow Stranded. Work alone or from tribes to survive, hunt and share resources to live another day in the wilderness. As your survival skills increase you will get more tools and ways to survive.

Basics

You have 3 basic needs. Food, water, and rest (fatigue). Each need is displayed in the top left corner as a meter. As the meter goes down, you get closer and closer to death.

Food

To satisfy your need for food, press the use key (which is, as default, bound to “E”) on the ground to start foraging. Foraging will turn up seeds for food. The only eatable plants are oranges, melons, and bananas. Once you find a sufficient amount of seeds, plant them in the ground by pressing your menu button (prop menu in non-stranded servers), clicking on the planting tab, and selecting what fruit you want to plant. Planting takes a small amount of time to complete. After a while your plants will grow up, and become ready for harvest. To harvest and eat your plants, simply press E on the fruit part of the plant. After the fruit is gone, the plant will die and disappear.

Water

When your are thirsty, simply dive in to the water, look up, and press the use key multiple times. Or you can bottle some water and then drink that bottle of water.

Rest/Fatigue

Finally, you need to rest. When you rest you will want a shelter to protect you from the elements. Without shelter, your health will go down while sleeping. Anything that provides shade and protection will work. For example purposes, chop 10 Wood. To chop wood, take our your hands, and left click on a tree. It will take a little time to chop. You may, and probably will fail the first time you chop wood. Just keep trying, and you'll get 10 Wood. Now go to the menu and click on the construction tab. Find “Wood Plating”. Click on it, and find a big fence of wood. Click on the fence, and it will start constructing. Again, this will take a small amount of time to complete. When it is complete, take out your physics gun and rotate it until it's flat. Then move it above your head, and freeze it there. Now that your shelter is done, it's time to sleep in it. Go to your menu, click on the commands tab, and press sleep. While your asleep, your fatigue bar will go up, however, your thirst and hunger bars will go down, so wait until you get enough sleep to satisfy you, but not enough to starve/dehydrate you.

Recommended Survival Technique

Before I start this guide, if you don't know how to obtain an item, go to the items section. If you don't know how to set up structures, go to the menu section. If you don't know how to satisfy any of your “meters” go back up to the basics section.

What This Guide Is

This guide is the recommended process to go from nothing to a survival empire. It shows the most efficient way to set everything up, and what order you should do it in.

Selecting Your Spot

The first thing you will want to do is find a good spot to set up camp. A good spot includes water, stone, forage-able ground (grass, sand, snow, or dirt). It also is preferably small and secluded, easy to defend, and to set up. Now that you've selected your spot, it's time to set up camp.

Setting Up Camp

First, you'll want to set up your food base. Forage, and plant 4-8 fruit plants, and replant them often. Trust me on this, they'll run out fast. Reusing seeds that you find from eating, or accidentally foraging (it happens) can help you majorly. After this, you'll want to set up shelter. I would recommend a small shack made of “models/props_wasteland/wood_fence01a.mdl”, in the Wood – Doors/Plating/Beams category. A wood shack will require 5 of these (a small cube, except you don't need a floor), and each costs 10 Wood. Chop down 50 Wood, and your good to go. They break in about 3 hits, even small bumps can break them. If this happens, just replace it. Now that you have a shelter, you can store all of your resources in there without worrying about people coming by and stealing them (unless they break into your shelter). Simply use the front side of the shack as a door, by moving it out of the way when you want to get in, and moving it back in place to close it up.

Stone Technology

Now that the basics are in place, start by creating a stone workbench. This requires 30 Stone, and 20 Wood. Once this is in place, gather 15 Stone, and 15 Wood, and use these materials to create a stone pickaxe, and a stone hatchet. If you have 3 Weapon Crafting, create a Wooden Spoon, made of 5 Wood. If used properly, this will prevent you from having to resort to foraging again. Now use your new Stone Pickaxe to start mining. You will now be able to get copper ore, but you won't be able to do anything with it just yet. Wait until you have 40 Stone, and set up a grinding stone. Now that you have a Grinding Stone, you can make sand, one of the ingredients in Concrete, which will be needed later. Now, gather 35 more Stone. This may be tedious, but it will pay off in the end. Set up a Stone Furnace with the Stone. Now that you have this, you're on your way to being able to use copper.

Copper Technology

At this point, you could create copper props, and upgrade your shack. However, this is a waste of time (just wait until you get Iron). However, I would suggest creating a fenced in area for your resources, however this is not required if you have them in a secure place. A Copper Workbench is needed for copper tools. This is where Concrete comes in. The copper workbench requires 30 Copper, 10 Stone, 20 Wood, and 5 Concrete. By this time, you should have enough Copper Ore to cover the Copper requirement. If you need any more wood, simply chop it down. Then mine 35 Stone, if you don't have this either. Concrete is a combination of 5 Sand (made at a Grinding Stone, made from Stone, at a 1 for 1 ratio, in increments of 1, 5, and 10), and 2 Water Bottles. That means to make 5 Concrete, you will need 25 Sand and 10 Water Bottles. Go ahead and make it. Now that you have a Copper Workbench, go and gather 15 Copper, and 15 Wood. Now use those resources to create a Copper Pickaxe, and a Copper Hatchet. You'll notice that you can now get Wood easier, and mine Iron Ore. If you have enough Weapon Crafting, create a Crowbar out of 20 Copper, 20 Iron, and ? Concrete, to defend yourself from other tribes, if necessary. To smelt the Iron Ore, you'll need a Copper Furnace. A Copper Furnace requires 35 Copper. Mine and smelt this, and your good to go.

Iron Technology

Now that you have the ability to create Iron, set up a Iron Workbench. This requires a 30 Iron, 20 Stone, 10 Wood, and an amazing 15 Concrete. You should have enough Iron and Stone for this. Chop down the 10 Wood if you need to. The Concrete here is the main problem. For 15 Concrete, you need 75 Sand and 30 Water Bottles. At this point, you may have enough stone, or you may not. You will need 30 Water Bottles now. Now that you have a Iron Workbench, get 50 Iron, and 10 Wood. Once you have this, create an Iron Pickaxe, and an Iron Hatchet. These are the ultimate tools. The Iron Hatchet is so fast at cutting trees that you will essentially be a one man saw mill. The Iron Pickaxe mines mostly Iron, and on top of that decreases mining wait time.

Base Fortification

Now that you have Iron, it's time to fortify your base. How you do this is up to you, but I would have a wall around all of your stuff (which, if you want can be set up after all of the other structures are set up), a “House” to sleep and/or store resources (and, if you use the “House” only to sleep, a storage area), a area for your equipment (workbenches, furnaces, etc.), and a door, whether it be just a moveable prop, or a complex door with hinges and wenches (tool gun required). Try to claim as little area as you can. Bigger area means more walls. More walls means more work.

Factory

A Factory is a very useful structure. It can smelt up to 200 of a ore at one time fairly fast. It can also create other items besides metals. For a insanely good structure, there's an insanely big price for it. 200 Iron, 100 Copper, and 50 Stone is required to create this massive structure. Once you've created this, your on your way to domination of the island.

Cooking

You don't want to have to eat fruit forever. Alternative foods are available, and can restore more hunger, and always restore a certain percentage of your health. To eat alternative foods, such as meat or herbs, you will need something to cook it with. You can cook food with a fire (a wood prop started on fire with the Command Make Campfire in the menu), however a Stove is more efficient, and has less of a failure rate. A stove requires 25 Iron, 10 Copper, and 35 Wood. Once you have created your stove, it's time to gather food. The simplest dishes are Salads (restores ? hunger and ? health), Fried Meat (restores ? hunger and ? health), and Sushi (restores ? hunger and ? health). Salads require ??? herbs, which can be found by foraging. Fried Meat requires... Meat. Meat is obtained by killing Antlions (usually found on some part of the island). Sushi requires 2 Bass, which is found by fishing.

Drinking Fountain

A Drinking Fountain is portable water. It helps when working when you can simply turn around and drink, instead of having to go over your base's walls. It also allows you to get your fill of water faster, making it more efficient, even if your right next to natural water. A Drinking Fountain requires 50 Copper, 50 Iron, 50 Water Bottles, and a whopping 40 Concrete. The main problems are the Water Bottles, and the Concrete. By this time, I would guess you have a lot of excess stone, which means Sand shouldn't be too much of a problem. Water Bottles should be however. It will take 200 Stone and 130 Water Bottles. The other resources shouldn't be a problem.

Iron Furnace

An Iron Furnace is required for the next part. Iron Furnaces simply require 35 Iron, and instead of smelting ore, it smelts oddities such as Charcoal.

Benefits

Being Platinum on the Stranded Server comes with some advantages, here is the list.

Survival as Platinum

As a Platinum Member, you have some benefits that actually come in really handy. The guide below is focused on surviving with those benefits.

Start by going to a rock and mining with your Platinum Pickaxe. At this point it doesn't matter if you die yet. Mine 35 stone, then pick a basecamp and create a stone furnace. Now focus on mining about 110 copper ore. Smelt all of this and make a small base out of the ten fences 110 copper ore can get you. Now you should start worrying about a place to sleep and food, while I always just sleep under my furnace, you might be civilized enough not to. Forage by pressing E on the ground and plant whatever seeds you get (Except berries and grain, they're useless and they lag) From this point on you can follow Sleepydragn's guide, starting from the Copper Technology part.
